I was fortunate enough to spend ten days in the Hawaiian islands recently. (That’s me in the pic avoiding the eye of the camera on Sunset Beach, Oahu. Just look at those waves! That huge sky!) I loved every minute of our island vacation, from snorkeling to spectacular sunsets to the generous Mai Tai’s they serve everywhere — I recommend the Degeneres Mai Tai at the Mai Tai Bar in Honolulu. I do not recommend drinking a bunch of them before boarding the plane home. Nor do I recommend having more Mai Tai’s at the airport and more cocktails on the plane. You will end up being the most pathetic traveller ever to grace Houston airport on an 8 am layover. My husband hid behind his newspaper as I draped myself across three hard bench chairs moaning about how dehydrated/hungover/nauseous/headachey/unhappy I felt. Yes, the worst part about a Hawaiian vacation is returning home. Home is cold today — -17 degrees below zero last time I checked. (For the rest of this winter I may only want to write about all things Hawaiian. Why the blog? Well, what writer can resist? I thought about whether I might attempt to offer the world a cool thematic blog: except I have no desire to cook a Beef Bourguignon and report back a la The Julie/Julia Project nor does the blogosphere need more political or fashion blogs (which, from my pen, would be even more pathetic than being hungover at Houston International). Therefore, my blog will be left to shapeshift according to my current preoccupations. Mostly this will be a writing blog since I am a writer. An idiosyncratic kind of writer. But no worries: I won’t tell you what I had for breakfast (unless it was a exciting literary breakfast of champions kind of meal). I will tell you about my writing and what I am doing related to writing. I love to set awhile and talk creative process. And books. And I like juicy writing gossip too. Comments and encouragement are welcome here. And Mai Tai’s. Once I figure out how to turn on the comments. And the Mai Tai widget.
